Bioengineering Capstone Senior Design Project

The capstone Senior Design program at Clemson allows Bioengineering seniors to identify clinical needs-based problems and develop solutions to these problems over two semesters through prototyping, testing, and validation. Read more about the senior design program here.
For my senior design project, I worked with a team of three other women - Katie Tobik, Jennifer Hadley, and Natalie Ivey - to design a solution to the issue of patient motion during gynecological surgeries using the Trendelenburg position. We created a support system consisting of a mattress and shoulder supports as well as a monitor to alert the operating team if the patient has slipped out of the recommended position. We worked with Dr. John DesJardins, Professor of Bioengineering at Clemson University, Dr. Benjie Mills, OB-GYN at Greenville Health System (now Prisma Health), and the team at Bergad Specialty Foams in Kittanning, PA.

Project Abstract
The GynoGenie by Estropower is a patient positioning system for use in the Trendelenburg position. OB/GYN procedures using the Trendelenburg and lithotomy position comprised 6% of all US procedures in 2015 [1]. After these procedures, 0.16% of patients have a brachial plexus injury, 1-2% have a neuropathy, 37% have back pain, and all are at an increased risk for skin ulcerations [2]. Through a combination of novel components, the GynoGenie functions to comfortably maintain patient position by limiting patient motion and thereby mitigating back, neurological, and skin injuries. Using a high-friction viscoelastic foam mat to reduce patient slip, maintaining 57% total patient contact with this mat even when draw sheet is in use, the GynoGenie conforms and limits slide. A novel draw sheet made of alternating woven nylon and cotton strips supplies a yield strength of 6500-8500 psi, patients only exerting a maximum of 4 psi when lifted, and ensures maximum patient contact with the pad. A 2-4 inch dual-layer graded foam mattress and shoulder supports integrate with existing hospital operating beds. The mattress and steel frame of the shoulder supports are padded with supportive and conforming foam layers to help support the patient’s body comfortably and effectively. Finally, a light alerts users if patients are moving from the proper Trendelenburg position through a universally-understood angle monitoring system. Reusable components of the design are covered in medical-grade vinyl and are sterilizable with standard operating room procedures and the disposable components allow for easy operating room clean-up.
